Abstract

The challenge of useful serial photographic documentation of hair loss can be met by using a regimented approach at each photographic session. Patient outcomes that are better documented allow for more informed decisions to be made about the course of therapy by both the physician and the patient.

A bit more text:

The ability to photographically document patient progress is especially useful in recording the subtle changes that a hair loss patient may have between office visits. Serial photography (sequential photographs) can be used by both the physician and the patient to assess these changes. Figures 1A and 1B show the therapeutic benefit a patient has achieved in the vertex area of the scalp from an initial to a 6-month follow-up visit. The physician’s challenge as the photographer is significant: to take photographs that allow for the assessment of change, and not a critique of photographic technique. Variability in technique, including patient preparation, lighting, camera settings, camera to patient registration, film, and processing can all undermine the best intentions of photographic documentation.

High-quality clinical photography can be accomplished in the examination room. With the 35-mm camera equipment you may already have in your office, you can structure a methodic approach for taking reproducible serial photographs. Controlled reproducible serial photographs should read like a time-lapse movie, allowing for only the change in a patient’s condition over time. Clinical researchers studying androgenetic alopecia worldwide use controlled photography for primary and secondary endpoints of protocols to determine the efficacy of therapies.

Study: Male Pattern Baldness: classification and Incidence – by NORWOOD, O’TAR T. MD

Title:

Male Pattern Baldness: classification and Incidence NORWOOD, O’TAR T. MD – Southern Medical Journal

Abstract:

The need for a widely accepted, accurate, and reproducible standard of classification for male pattern baldness has increased with the advent and increasing popularity of hair transplant surgery. This report establishes such a classification, and reports its use in determining the incidence of male pattern baldness at various ages in 1,000 white adult male subjects. The action of testosterone as an incitant in male pattern baldness is well known, but this study points out the continued effect of time, even in later years. Since most hair transplant surgery is performed on subjects with male pattern baldness, and because the success of hair transplant surgery is largely dependent on proper patient selection, a complete understanding of male pattern baldness is essential for consistently good results with hair transplantation.

Causes of Female Pattern Hair Loss and Male Pattern Hair Loss (MPB)

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

This may be the most important question for you to ask. Once you know the cause you can work on a solution. Let’s get started:

It is clear that genetics and inheritance play a role in female and male pattern hair loss in creating a predisposition to hair loss or other related dysfunctions that coexist or cause hair loss. However, genetics are triggered and moderated by many factors, environmental, metabolic, dietary etc.. genetics alone do not offer an answer nor an understanding of why patterned hair loss occurs or how it can be reversed. Thanks to the polygenic nature of so called androgenic alopecia (AGA) we don’t fully understand how AGA happens within the androgen-dependent air loss model.

For now, male pattern baldness (MPB),  female pattern baldness is best defined as by visual means using a system such as the Hamilton-Norwood or Ludwig classification systems. The reality is that hair loss is caused by many factors, it is your body’s canary in a gold mine, alerting you to a larger issue within the body that needs to be addressed.

Most scientific research done regarding androgenic alopecia (AGA) concentrated on androgenic metabolism and androgenic receptors and the genes involved; however, as stated earlier many causes and models exist that may be worth investigating.  Some of these come from research into areas other than hair loss such as cardivascular and cancer research. Since hair loss incidents are linked to some of these diseases, preventing some of these degenerative diseases potentially does reverse hair loss.

Naturally, the list below is a glimpse at a vast field.. oversimplified.

I have found many causes of hair loss, many of them overlap. Each of these will be explained in more detail individually as I get the time to write more.. The list below is enough to get you excited (I hope) and get you started on your research.

Hair Life-cycle Stages

Sunday, January 2nd, 2011

Hair grows in three (3) stages: Anagen, Catagen, and Telogen.

The Anagen phase is the phase where hair is actively growing. This phase usually lasts longer in women than men. When hair loss occurs it was found that the anagen phase shortens and the hair strand gets thinner (miniaturization of hair).

Nourishing the hair starts in nourishing your body. A permanent solution to hair loss lies in nutrition, diet, metabolism, hormones, not in topicals. Topically applied herbs and oils can help but they often help by decreasing inflammation locally on the scalp or by killing off scalp parasites.

Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever?

Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever?
by: Stephen Sinatra, M.D., F.A.C.C.

Throughout practically all of history, we humans have walked barefoot and slept on the ground, largely oblivious to the fact that the gentle surface energies of the Earth harmonize and stabilize the body’s fundamental biological rhythms and keep inflammation at bay.

In our contemporary Western world, the widespread use of insulative rubber or plastic soled shoes has disconnected us from these nurturing energies and, of course, we no longer sleep on the ground as we did in times past.

New research, which I am proud to be involved in, indicates that this physical disconnect from the Earth creates abnormalities in the physiology and contributes to the chronic inflammation, pain, fatigue, stress, and poor sleep that are so rampant in our modern society.

Along with the research has emerged an amazingly simple remedy for many health problems, including the chronic inflammation regarded as the cause of most common modern diseases, including cardiovascular disease.  The remedy is something right beneath our feet – the Earth itself!

The Greatest Health Discovery in My Career
During my nearly forty years as a practicing cardiologist, I have encountered and used many wonderful natural treatments and seen first-hand astounding lifesaving technological advances. The greatest health discovery of my career, however, is something totally different and more natural than anything I could ever have imagined.

This discovery is called Earthing and it means reconnecting the human body to the Earth’s natural and subtle electric frequencies that few people even know exist. The surface of the planet, science tells us, brims with health-sustaining energy, but until recently the extraordinary benefits that it offers were basically unknown.

Understanding Scientific Research

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

The internet has made it possible for anyone to look for scientific studies online. YOU, yes you, could learn more than your doctor knows about some specific condition you have thanks to the internet.

I’ve spent countless hours on research websites reading through scientific studies. Sometimes studies contain results that your allopathic main stream family physician is unaware of.

I am sure you noticed news stories about health that contradict each other. Conflicting medical reports can make even the most educated consumer confused about what to believe and what to do.

Many people are interested in managing their own health or researching conditions and confirming what their health practitioner recommended. Nowadays,  consumers can get health information from thousands of health-related books, videos, CD-ROMs, magazines, newspapers, television, other people, and off the Internet. However, with so much information, it could be difficult to distinguish between reliable and unreliable information, information and misinformation.

I am amazed how main stream MDs seem to be lagging behind today’s research. To make matters more challenging, news health reports on television, newspapers and magazines, despite seeming credible cannot be taken on face value.

Next time you hear or read about medical research, you should find the research and read it to interpret it. Many epidemiological  studies can be subject to misinterpretation  of biased interpretation.

This article offers some info to help you get started reading studies and understanding them.

Title: Presidential cancer advisors find courage to warn about environmental risks of cancer chemicals

Tuesday, May 11, 2010
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger
Editor of NaturalNews.com

(NaturalNews) When a government panel of experts finds the courage to tell the truth about cancer, it’s an event so rare that it becomes newsworthy. Late last week, a report from the President’s Cancer Panel (PCP) broke ranks with the sick-care cancer establishment and dared to say something that natural health advocates have been warning about for decades: That Americans are “bombarded” with cancer-causing chemicals and radiation, and if we hope to reduce cancer rates, we must eliminate cancer-causing chemicals in foods, medicines, personal care products and our work and home environments.

In a directive to President Obama, the report states, “The panel urges you most strongly to use the power of your office to remove the carcinogens and other toxins from our food, water, and air that needlessly increase healthcare costs, cripple our nation’s productivity, and devastate American lives.”

When I first read that, I just about fell out of my chair. Government-appointed experts are really saying that there are cancer-causing chemicals in our food and water? That simple fact has been vehemently denied by the cancer industry, processed food giants, personal care product companies and of course the fluoride lobby — all of which insist their chemicals are perfectly safe.

The Hidden Wikipedia: How to Find Deleted Material about Nutritional Medicine

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

Is there a conspiracy, even on Wikipedia, to limit people’s information about alternative treatments for cancer patients, and one that sensors real doctors that could heal people?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Orthomolecular Medicine News Service, May 11, 2010

The Hidden Wikipedia:
How to Find Deleted Material about Nutritional Medicine

(OMNS, May 11, 2010) There is nothing quite like a paper trail, and Wikipedia has one. Consequently, you can read for yourself all the material that has been added, and then deleted.
For example: Wikipedia’s page about Max Gerson, M.D., is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Gerson . The doctor is widely known for the nutritional cancer therapy that bears his name. Gerson’s principal biographer is his grandson, Howard Straus http://www.doctoryourself.com/gersonbio.htm . Mr. Straus tells the Orthomolecular Medicine News Service of some interesting experiences he has had with Wikipedia bias:
“Some years ago, on seeing that the pages for Dr. Max Gerson and the Gerson Therapy were only stubs (short place-holders with little information on them), I took it upon myself to flesh out the pages. I thought Wikipedia was fairly neutral on balance, so I put in all the information that I could, and kept it factual with references, citations, and literature links.
“Within a month, the following had happened:
“The information was labeled as “biased” and “unreliable” because I am Dr. Gerson’s grandson and biographer. There appeared a big red flag at the top of the article labeling the articles neutrality “dubious.” The photograph I posted was removed. Provable, referenced facts, with dates and places, all suddenly became “claims,” even quotes from no less than Nobel Laureate Albert Schweitzer, M.D., who famously said: “I see in Dr. Max Gerson one of the most eminent geniuses in medical history.” Dr. Schweitzer and his wife were patients of Dr. Gerson, making this a first-hand account from a rather reliable source.
“All my links, references and citations were removed. They were replaced by links to the American Cancer Society and National Cancer Institute, which offer only criticism of the Gerson Therapy. Even quotations from published scientific papers were removed. Attempts to rectify these actions were immediately overwritten.
“It’s easy enough to show the progression of the pages, since Wikipedia displays former edits on request, dated and documented. One can verify this by clicking on the “History” tab at the top of the Max Gerson page, and looking at 2005 and before. My editing is archived at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/69.109.140.164 and also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Howard_Straus
“A second Wikipedia page, specific to the Gerson Therapy, has been completely removed. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Gerson_therapy&redirect=no . To see something of what happened, you can click the “History” tab here as well.”
The OMNS adds just one other intriguing statement about Dr. Gerson’s work that is probably too “unreliable” to be seen on Wikipedia:
“I know of one patient who turned to Gerson Therapy having been told she was suffering from terminal cancer and would not survive another course of chemotherapy. Happily, seven years later, she is alive and well. So it is vital that, rather than dismissing such experiences, we should further investigate the beneficial nature of these treatments.” (H.R.H. Charles, Prince of Wales)
Max Gerson is not the only nutritionally-oriented physician whose work is slanted or censored at Wikipedia. Others include Matthias Rath, M.D., and Robert F. Cathcart III, M.D.
Matthias Rath, M.D.
Dr. Rath coauthored a number of papers with Linus Pauling. (1-Cool They discussed high-dose vitamin therapy for cardiovascular disease. To see what is going on at Wikipedia concerning him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Matthias_Rath
Paul Anthony Taylor, a supporter of Dr. Rath, comments: “Instead of providing free access to the sum of all human knowledge, as is its supposed aim, Wikipedia would appear to be just another way of supporting the scientific, political and social status quo. In a sense, however, the game is already up for Wikipedia. The official exams watchdog in the UK, Ofqual, recently stated that schoolchildren should avoid it as it is not “authoritative or accurate” and in some cases “may be completely untrue” http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/6943325/Schoolchildren-told-to-avoid-Wikipedia.html Believe it or not, one of Wikipedia’s contributors is the CIA, and they are not just updating their own entries, either. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/08/16/2007049.htm When it comes to nutritional therapies, you won’t currently find much of it on Wikipedia.”
Robert F. Cathcart, M.D.
The Wikipedia page for this physician has been deleted. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Robert_Cathcart
Why? Because Dr. Cathcart “does not meet notability criteria per WP:BIO http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:BIO ” and “a quick google search shows up no reliable hits for this subject.”
Indeed? It appears that someone was not looking. Orthopedic surgeon Robert F. Cathcart III is the inventor of the Cathcart Elliptical Orthocentric Endoprosthesis, a replacement hip-ball joint still in widespread use today after 37 years. http://www.orthomed.com/pros.pdf Some physicians report it to be superior to other similar devices. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2661497 That alone qualifies him as notable, and invalidates the deletion of his page at Wikipedia. In addition, Linus Pauling personally singled out Dr. Cathcart for recognition for his nutritional knowledge as early as 1978. (9)
Possibly, just possibly, the real reason Dr. Cathcart is deleted from Wikipedia has much more to do with his outspoken advocacy of very high doses of vitamin C to treat viral illnesses. http://www.doctoryourself.com/cathcart_thirdface.html and either http://www.doctoryourself.com/titration.html or http://www.orthomed.com/titrate.htm
Here is all the deleted material on Dr. Cathcart: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Robert_Cathcart&action=history
