Edgar Cayce’s Hair Loss Remedies – Pt. 1 – Crude Oil, Castor Oil etc.

I have not tried the crude oil method.. But I was intrigued by the Edgar Cayce’s methods and regimen suggestions, that I compiled some of the info I have below. Please note, lots of the advice is in-line with other good advice that I came across and share here, however I would not use the crude oil topical, crude oil contains benzene which is a known carcinogen.  I am not sure why crude oil would work at all… if you know more on this please contact me.

Please note, Cayce’s advice is not medical advice.. Do not apply crude oil on your scalp it contains benzene which is a known carcinogen.

“To his credit, Cayce recommended a healthy diet plus herbal and vitamin supplements to encourage hair growth. He also encouraged scalp massage to promote circulation. But his first rule of hair growth was to massage pure crude oil into the scalp. Cayce said that this treatment would ‘improve both the circulation of the scalp and the tone, luster and thickness of the hair.’

Following the crude oil application two or three times a month, Cayce recommended rinsing the hair with 20% grain alcohol to make the oil easier to wash out. The final step included rubbing Vaseline into the scalp to complete the hair rejuvenation process.

Cayce was careful to recommend only pure, unrefined crude oil ? no gasoline, kerosene or motor oil – and created his own brand that he named ?Crudoleum®.? Cayce?s Crudoleum® came from Pennsylvania and was said to have the mildest odor and the easiest texture to rinse out of hair. The reason, he said, is that Pennsylvania crude is paraffin-based. Darker oil is asphalt-based and, according to Cayce, more difficult to use.

The crude oil concept has since spawned an entire line of Crudoleum® hair products, including a hair rinse, hair conditioner and hair cream.

Literature on Cayce’s original Crudoleum® Hair Treatment says that it’s ‘no miracle cure’ but should be used for several months to fully stimulate growth. Although the balding man I spoke with wasn’t exactly living proof of Crudoleum’s effectiveness, he did point out a study of 45 Crudoleum® users conducted in 1972:

4% reported complete hair restoration, 7% reported considerable hair restoration, 18% reported considerable hair restoration, 18% reported moderate restoration, while 42% reported little restoration and 29% none.”

Quote:

My “plan” to cure my baldness followed this Edgar Cayce regimen:

I. I took Atomidine internally (one drop in a glass of water)
in the morning (at least 30 minutes before I ate anything)
five mornings in a row.

Then on one of the following five days I would massage pure
crude oil into my scalp (only ONE time during the five days
- usually in the evening), using the electrically driven
vibrator with suction cup applicator suggested by E. Cayce.

(I would do this for 45 minutes to 1 hour. I would cleanse
the scalp afterwards with the 20% alcohol solution advised by
Cayce.)

After the five days had passed, I would take Atomidine again
for five days as described above.

And then again, once in the five days following I would
massage the scalp with the pure crude oil, using the vibrator
(45 minutes to 1 hour), then cleansing with the 20% alcohol
solution.

THEN I WOULD REST FOR TWO WEEKS.

Then I would repeat the whole above process again.

NOTE: The crude oil is MESSY but you get used to it.

II. EXERCISES

Twice each day (once in the morning and once at night) I
would perform the Edgar Cayce (1) head and neck exercise,
(2) the catcrawl exercise – much stretching trying to touch
the feet to the head or behind the top of the head, if I
could (10 tries with each foot), and (3) the torso circle
exercise – (15 or so rotations with each hip). All of these
[exercises] are described as promoting glandular activity and
they are all described in Dr. Reilly’s book (Edgar Cayce’s
Handbook to Health Through Drugless Therapy).

III. DIET

(Aside from what I DID eat, I TOTALLY avoided sweets and any
kind of alcoholic beverages.)

MORNINGS

I would eat some kind of whole wheat, whether it be cereal or
bread. When I ate whole wheat bread, I would eat pure peanut
butter with it. (I avoided milk in cereal, opting for water
because Dr. Reilly said that milk is constipating and not
good for athletes who need wind. I am a daily runner and a
basketball player, so I avoided milk.) All I ate was some
kind of whole wheat and that was it.

MID-MORNINGS

I would drink some kind of citrus juice, usually orange or
grapefruit. (I would mix it with lemon or lime juice as
described by Dr. Reilly and Edgar Cayce.)

NOON:

I would eat a LARGE salad WITH GELATIN. The salad would
include lettuce, celery, lots of carrots, tomatoes, onions,
radishes (and sometimes green peppers, green beans, squash,
or beets.) About 20 minutes to 1/2 hour before eating the
salad I would eat a packet of gelatin (Knox) and wash it down
with pure Welch’s grape juice (both are supposed to help the
body assimilate the salad.)

NIGHT:

I would eat another LARGE salad consisting of the items
mentioned above (also preceded by the grape juice and
gelatin.) I would also eat 3 egg yolks from large eggs (only
the yolks) and I would eat the peelings from at least one
Irish potato (Cayce only advised this 3 or 4 times a week,
but I did it nightly anyway). I would also supplement the
salad with at least one protein source such as yogurt or
white meats (turkey, chicken or fish). At least twice a week
I tried to have some kind of seafood such as tuna or shrimp.
These I always ate at the evening meal supplementing the
salad.

IV. SHAMPOO

I used Packer’s Pine Tar shampoo (once a day in the morning
during my shower). I used this in “cake” form as well as
the shampoo form. (I really think that the soap in cake form
works BETTER than the shampoo, but that’s just my opinion.)

V. MASSAGE

Almost every night (after exercising) before turning in, I
would massage my scalp all over either with the fingertips
or with the electric vibrator (attempting to increase
circulation to the scalp).

Also, EVERY morning after getting out of the shower I would
apply Listerine to the deeply receded portions of the scalp
and the front of the forehead. (Cayce only advised this 3 or
4 times a week, but I did it every day.)

VI. ENEMAS

Cayce advised these at least once a month, but I did them
once a week, using an enema bag with a colon tube attached
instead. Cayce also advised that the water be taken in and
expelled three times (twice laying first on right side and
on left side with soda and salt, and once [this time on all
four] with Glyco-Thymoline.

I examined the waters expelled after three times like this
and found that they were still fairly “polluted,” so I did
the Cayce enema suggestion THREE times in succession (or
9 times – taking in water and expelling it.) By the 8th
or 9th water, my system as CLEAN (the water expelled was
nearly clear.)

I strongly advise this part of the Cayce remedy – keep up the
enemas until the water expelled is clear. It’s definitely
NO FUN. I readily admit this, but it will only take about
an hour and a half a week (or a month, depending on how
often you do it) to really cleanse yourself.

This concludes my total treatment plan.

Let me add that for the first month or so this is all (as a
total plan) strange to adjust to, but once it becomes a habit
it doesn’t take very much time. It really isn’t very hard
and anyone who is REALLY serious about his/her hair won’t
mind it very much. You just have to believe that you’re
doing the best possible thing you can for yourself, and
you WILL see results.

RESULTS

The most obvious results are these. Before my hair started
falling out at all, I ALWAYS parted my hair in the middle and
had shoulder length curly hair. (My hair was also very light
brown with shades of red and even blonde in it.) My hair had
gotten so bad that a year ago I had to part the hair on the
side to try to comb over and hid the thin spots. I had cut
my bangs (which were formerly about to my nose) to about an
inch above my eyebrows, and I was having to clip them shorter
and shorter as time passed and the hair got thinner. ALSO,
my hair was losing a lot of its luster and it was turning a
very dark brown – all of the red and blonde and light brown
hair was nowhere to be seen.

After 5 1/2 months of the Cayce plan, I have been able to
grow my bangs back out to the eyebrows. I can easily part my
hair down the middle again and the reddish blonde lightness
is returning to my hair. What more can I ask? I KNOW that
as more time passes the hair will only get thicker and better
looking. (Cayce said to give roughly 6 to 8 months to see
results, so I’ve still got almost another 3 months to go to
see how “complete” my results may REALLY be.) But I am happy
with the results now, even if nothing else ever happens. It
was worth every bit of time, effort, discipline, and money I
put into it.

[YEA]  02/09/2010: Linda from San Antonio, Texas writes: “I am female, 58 years old, and I always had thin, fine hair that became thinner as I got older until you could easily see my scalp throught the hair in the front and the crown of my head. About 3 years ago, I started using Pennsylvania crude oil per Edgar Cayce’s protocol and I am still amazed as my hair just gets thicker every month; new growth is constant. I have never had hair like this, even as a child. I was always self-conscious about my hair (vanity?)and used any means possible to make it look thicker; perms, coloring, teasing. I feel great about the way my hair looks for the first time ever (I can remember sending nightly prayers as a child for pretty hair). I just want to tell everyone I see with thinning hair about it! I don’t very often, though, unless asked. I have told several hairdressers so that they could share it with their customers; suprisingly, only one of them showed any interest. There are about 6 recommended steps to the protocol, including an herbal tonic and massaging with petroleum jelly. I started with just the petroleum jelly for financial reasons, and I saw rapid improvement in just a few weeks. Then I added the crude oil and the herbal tonic and I have been using those three since then. I use the oil followed by the petroleum jelly once a week and the tonic once a day. The instructions on his site are clear and you can also see the products if you look on his website for companies who make and sell products made with Edgar Cayce formulas. I had to write because I have used many remedies from this website and I am very grateful that you are here, all of you!! Namaste.”

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE FOR YOU TO SEE HEAD FULL OF HAIR AFTER YOU STARTED EDGAR CAYCE’S TREATMENT? THANX”

[YEA]  12/16/2010: Brooke from Montgomery, Tx, Usa replies: “Yes it works! I don’t even know how long I have been using the crude oil, Vaseline, massage, and shampoos – 15-20 years or so! It has made my hair not fall out but it never changed the appearance. Two months ago, I got the tonic and now my hair is growing faster, it use to be so thin, but now it is thicker, I don’t need to use hair spray anymore either! If I want to curl it, I curl it and it stays curled! It is amazing that for as long as I have studied the Cayce readings (25 years) that I never tried the tonic!! I would suggest it to anyone who is having hair loss. If you start with his remedies right when you notice the hair loss, it would be better. If you wait until it all falls out, it may be too late.
The formula has the following ingredients:Lactated Pepsin, Black Snake Root Extract, Essence of Wild Ginseng, Atomic Iodine, Extract of Liver, and Grain Alcohol. It can be found online or at a health food store.”

3) IRF (“Black Book”) DESCRIPTION OF THE TREATMENT FORMAT
(4056-1)
Yes.  As we find, there is a lack of activity of the glands in the thyroid area.  This causes a weakness in the activities to nails and hair over the body.
We would take small doses of Atomidine to purify in the thyroid activity.  Take one drop each morning for five days in succession.  Then leave off for five days.
During that period give the scalp a thorough massage with crude oil; using the electrically driven vibrator with the suction applicator.  This should be done very thoroughly, not hurriedly and should require at least thirty to forty minutes for the massage with the crude oil and then the application of white Vaseline and then the electrically driven vibrator using the suction cup applicator.
Then begin the first of the next week with the Atomidine, one drop each morning for five days.
Then during the next five days (now the middle of the week) give another crude oil shampoo following with the white Vaseline and the vibrator treatment.
Leave these off then for two weeks.
Then have another complete series, but between each two series allow two weeks to elapse.
Doing these, we will find that in six to eight months it will begin to stimulate the activities for the growth of hair over the scalp and on body.
Do use the diets that carry iodine in their natural forms. Use only kelp salt or deep sea salt.  Plenty of seafoods.  These are preferable for the body.
Not too much sweets.  The egg yolk but not the white of egg should be taken.
Doing these we will bring better conditions for the body.

(3904-1)
As we find, there are conditions causing disturbances with this body.  These are because of improper coordination of the activities of the inner and outer glandular force as related to the thyroid.  This allows for deficiencies in certain chemical forces, especially as related to the epidermis, or the activities in the toes and the fingers and the hair.  These are distressing disturbances to the body.
There is that which has caused much of the disturbance – a long-standing subluxation existent in the 3rd and 4th lumbar centers, which prevents the perfect circulation through the glands of the thyroid area.
We would make corrections osteopathically in that specific area, coordinating the 3rd cervical and the lumbar axis with same.
We would also begin taking Atomidine internally as a purifier for the glands and to stimulate better thyroid activity.  This may change the heart’s regularity for the time but if it is properly administered and the osteopathic corrections are made properly, we will find changes wrought in the activities in the epidermis and as associated or related to the hair.
For the scalp we would prepare a close-fitting cap – oil cap to be used once a week or left on over night, when the scalp would be massaged with pure hog lard.  Not that which has been mixed with vegetable matter but the pure pork or hog lard.  Massage this in at night.  Sleep with it in the hair and scalp.  Using the cap as protection.  In the morning have
a thorough shampoo with Olive Oil shampoo, massaging the scalp afterward with white vaseline cut with a little alcohol solution – just sufficient to cleanse same; about a drop of
grain alcohol to an ounce of water – just enough to change the activity of same.
Do eat more of sea foods, more carrots, and – while certain times will have to be chosen for such – do eat onions and garlic.

(4086-1)
As we find, general conditions in a manner are very good, yet there are disturbances that cause a great deal of anxiety to the body.  These, however, are more in the purely physical, than that having to do with the body as an entity.  For these are rather the activities in the reflexes in the sensory and sympathetic nervous system, and arise from the body attempting to improve in a selfish manner upon what nature had intended for the body to be.
Thus there has been an upsetting of the glandular system by the activities in the body that destroy the effect of these glands, producing such elements in the thyroid glands, especially thus destroying the oils that were a portion of the activity in the sympathetic nervous system as related to the epidermis.
These may later, unless corrections are made, cause splotches where there will be discolorations in the skin until these may become rather patches over portions of the body,  especially the upper portion of the limbs, the hands and on the arms.  Yet, as we find if there will be a change of attitude mentally – much change may come physically – the body needn’t laugh at this, for it will find that one day the conditions will be rather serious unless there are measures taken to correct the mental, and not merely the physical or pathological conditions.
For, as it has experienced, these have had little to do with changing of the activities in the gland force of the body.  We would first begin with the taking internally once a day
for at least four days out of each week – and have it the same four days each week – one grain of Calcidin as prepared by the Abbott Company, Chicago.  This take say Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.  Leave off until the next week and repeat for a period of at least six weeks.

After this has clarified the respiratory and perspiratory system by the increasing of the activity through the respiratory and the lung and throat area and the iodine has acted upon the system, begin by massaging the scalp about once every twelve days with pure hog lard – yes this is an aversion to the body – but these properties will be needed in the physical self.  Massage this thoroughly into the body, the scalp, then cleanse with soft tepid water and with Fitch’s Dandruff Remover Shampoo.  This will purify scalp but let the grease that is rubbed into scalp remain for at least twenty minutes before it is washed out.  Then add a small quantity of white vaseline, massaging thoroughly into the scalp.
In the diet eat the soup from the peelings of Irish potatoes.  Add more often the raw vegetables such as lettuce, celery,  water cress, radishes, onions, mustard greens and all of those that may be prepared as salads and the like.  Carrots will make better conditions in combination with these for the sparkle of the eye and for the general vision.
Have the full evacuation of alimentary canal at least once a day and do at least once a month purify the colon by the use of high enemas.  These may be taken by self, provided the colon tube is used.  Use about a half a gallon of water, putting at least a heaping teaspoonful of salt and a heaping teaspoonful of soda in same, dissolved thoroughly.  Have the water body temperature and have the thermometer at least ninety or above.
Do these, be very careful with the general eliminations.
Keep away from all of those things such as hard drinks, carbonated water or the like and we will gain better health and have better superficial circulation.
Ready for questions.
(Q)  Did childbirth cause this condition to become worse?
(A)  It only aggravated, it is not the source of condition but too much of drying out of the scalp, as has been indicated, to improve upon nature.  Be natural:  You’ll be much more attractive.
We are through with this reading.

(1710-7)
(Q)  Why doesn’t the growth of hair show improvement?
(A)  This is the natural consequence of conditions that have been in the scalp.  The activity of the body shows that the glands do produce same, but getting it on the head is different!  That would require more of the use of the vacuum treatment AND the stimulating of the scalp to better activity.
The gland force is improved, and DOES grow hair – but not on the head so much.

Cayce Health Database

OVERVIEW OF BALDNESS

1. Physiological Considerations

Glandular insufficiency and spinal lesions (subluxations), according to the Cayce material, are by far the most common causes of hair loss (baldness) which may be accompanied by nail and even skin changes (abnormal pigmentation, vitiligo, etc.). Glandular dysfunction – usually the thyroid but the thymus and adrenals may also be involved may come about through the diet, i.e., insufficient amounts of necessary elements like calcium, or excesses of others like potassium. Other causes of glandular dysfunction include insufficient circulation, stress, infection, toxic chemicals (as found in cosmetics), general debilitation, etc.

The most commonly involved gland is the thyroid. It seems that when some elements necessary for proper thyroid functioning are missing, toxins which otherwise would have been eliminated are allowed to accumulate in the system. When this happens, inflammation, congestion, and circulatory disturbances occur, affecting the scalp and maybe the nails and skin. It is worth noting that the thyroid to some extent controls the circulation to the scalp, nails and skin, independent of the mechanism described above. When such disturbances occur, the outcome is hair loss with or without nail and skin changes, depending on the severity of the condition.

Impaired circulation from other causes may bring about the same effects without necessarily involving the thyroid or other glands, but is a much less common finding. The exception is spinal subluxation, being almost equally as frequent as glandular disturbance. It should be noted, though, that even when spinal subluxation is the primary condition, the glands often become involved as a result of impaired circulation through them (the thyroid especially). Hence in a large majority of cases the glands are either the primary or contributing cause of the condition.

In one or two instances, reference was made to prenatal tendencies as a contributory cause, but no definite information is available on this or on heredity.

II. Rationale of Therapy

The treatments recommended reflect the disease process involved and may be classified as follows:

  1. Correction of glandular dysfunction usually includes dietary advice where deficiencies are involved. Atomidine and sometimes glandular extracts (thyroid, adrenals, etc.) are necessary.
  2. Osteopathy: Series of treatments to correct spinal subluxation that may be causing circulatory, glandular and other organ system dysfunction as well as hair loss.
  3. Others: Treatment of underlying disorders (e.g., avoidance of stress and toxic chemicals, treatment of infections, etc.) as well as complications of basic disease process (e.g., spinal subluxation usually causes widespread effects) which may contribute to or aggravate the hair loss.

Osteopathic adjustments bring about improved circulation to the scalp, nails and skin, thus leading to beneficial changes. When digestive disturbances (assimilations/eliminations) are also present as a result of spinal lesions, toxic accumulations may be substantially eliminated or prevented in the digestive tract, further improving circulation to involved areas. What may be less obvious is that the use of laxatives, colonic enemas, etc., would bring about similar results through elimination of toxins.

These few examples are based on the assumption that the physiology described by Cayce is correct. Intuitively, it seems to make sense to me.

III. Suggested Therapeutic Regimen

Baldness is not a problem treated by the average physician, for there is no recommended medical treatment presently available. The following might be considered a reasonable approach to the average patient, from a study of the Edgar Cayce readings.

1. Correction of glandular deficiency.

  • Atomidine: Various programs were prescribed. There is no given formula for arriving at dosages. One suggestion is as follows:

One drop for seven days, rest five days
Two drops for seven days, rest five days
Three drops for seven days, rest five days
(May repeat this series once or twice.)

  • Thyroid extract in small doses two to three times a week for a few weeks in combination with Atomidine in severe deficiency.
  • Other glandular extracts (replacements), as necessary, e.g., adrenal.
  • Correction of mineral deficiencies and/or excesses (e.g., low calcium, high potassium). Calcios is a good source of calcium (a layer on a cracker taken every other day).
  • Dietary:
    • The skin of Irish potatoes cooked in Patapar paper (to preserve active principles) supplies some essential elements for proper thyroid function. This may be eaten three or more times a week. (Roasted or baked is also good so long as it is not burnt.)
    • Other helpful hints for better thyroid activity include citrus fruit juices – orange juice plus lemon or grapefruit juice plus lime – in combination with Atomidine will act on the thyroid to improve circulation to the scalp. Seafoods were recommended three times a week. Carrots are good.
    • Avoid: fried, greasy foods, fried meats, starches, refined sugars, onions, garlic.

2. Osteopathy: This would be helpful if a history of spinal injury is obtained or when other symptoms and signs warrant this. Even in the absence of the above a few treatments would probably still be beneficial, since circulation to the thyroid, scalp, nails, skin, etc., Will be enhanced. The areas manipulated as well as the number of treatments should be considered on an individual basis.

3. Local measures:

  • Crude oil massage to the scalp (one teaspoon) to stay on from one-half hour to 45 minutes. Then cleanse with a 20% grain alcohol solution. Follow this with a massage using white petroleum (Vaseline) into scalp (not too greasy).
    • An alternative would be a scalp massage with pure hog lard, leaving this on overnight after covering head with an oil cap.
    • Shampoo in the morning with olive oil shampoo followed by a massage with white Vaseline cut with a little alcohol (one drop grain alcohol to one ounce water). Either may be done once a week.
  • Violet ray treatment (20-25 times) to scalp, spine, scapula, umbilical area for a total of five to ten minutes on a daily basis. Ultraviolet ray treatments may be used instead, this done every third day, limiting treatment to scalp and spine for three to five minutes for 20-25 treatments.

4. Other: Maintain proper elimination through the use of laxatives, colonic enemas, massages, etc. Diathermy, vibrator, hydrotherapy, radio-active appliance were also recommended in some instances.

A prescription is given in reading 636-1 for restoring hair color. Dosage is half a teaspoon three times a day after meals for ten days with five days rest periods.

Steps 1 and 3 seem to be a must, while 2 and 4 may be utilized at the discretion of the therapist, depending on the case being treated.

Pure Castor Bean Oil & Hair Growth

By Christopher Hall, eHow Contributor

Genetics, overall health and how well you care for your hair can all play a part in how long and beautiful your hair can be. Not shampooing every day, avoiding hot hair dryers, and using very gentle brushes and good quality hair care products are all important to the health and beauty of your hair. Keeping your scalp healthy is also important, and one way to do this is through applying oil treatments. Castor oil can help strengthen hair follicles and give hair a lustrous shine as well as to promote growth.

1.
History

Castor oil, sometimes known as Palma Christi or the palms of Christ, has been used medicinally since ancient times. According to M. Grieve in her book “A Modern Botanical”, the ancient Egyptians used castor oil 4,000 years ago. It is mentioned in the Book of Jonah in the Bible, and was known to the ancient Greeks. According to Grieves, by the 18th century, use of castor oil had almost stopped. Jamaica supplied European demand. Edgar Cayce, psychic and holistic medicine practitioner, brought castor oil into modern times. He advocated using castor oil packs for many ailments, including inflammation, liver disease and arthritis.

Benefits

Hair loss remedies with castor oil have a lot of anecdotal evidence in their favor. According to Mamaherb.com, 100 percent of 37 users rate castor oil as having helped in hair loss. At essentialdayspa.com on the users’ forum, many users note that castor oil works to grow their eyelashes. According to Flavoursof India.com, an age-old treatment for hair loss is the castor oil massage, in this case with the addition of white iodine. According to the People’s Pharmacy, a medically reviewed website, there is no scientific literature supporting castor oil to cure baldness, or to make hair grow.

Features

Castor oil is a perennial or annual plant originating in East Africa. It has a long tap root and can be found everywhere but the very driest places in Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. The castor bean, where castor oil comes from, contains 50 percent to 55 percent oil. Ninety percent of all castor oil production comes from China, India and Brazil. Castor oil contains a poison called ricin. Because of the poison content in castor oil, care should be taken when using it, even for external applications. It needs to be kept out of the reach of children.

Effects

According to the National Non-Foods Crops Centre, castor oil is included in the European pharmacopeia. Its use as a laxative goes back 2,000 years. It is also a known cure for dandruff, and is used in Europe for dermatitis. It is a good protective for occupational eczema and dermatitis. It is well tolerated by the skin.

….

Castor Oil Treatment

Castor oil, if used for hair growth, needs to penetrate the skin. According to Mamaherb.com, you need to apply castor oil to your scalp and the top of your hair, then wrap your head in a towel and leave the castor oil in overnight. Rinse in the morning. Mamaherb.com suggests that you repeat every seven to 10 days and that you will see results after six or seven applications. Hairfinder.com, on the other hand, notes that if you have oily hair, you should not use any hot oil treatment more than once a month. Certainly, if you notice that your hair seems weighed down, scale back applications to once a month, or whatever works for your hair.
